Location/Other:

Tallgrass has a flexible working environment that offers employees the option to choose from compressed weeks with half-day Fridays or every other Friday off and Hybrid options for specific roles. Our spacious Lakewood, CO office offers free parking, an on-site gym, and food trucks twice a month! The pay range listed for this position is a good faith and reasonable estimate of the range of possible base compensation at the time of posting.

Primary purpose:

Join an ambitious company with aggressive growth goals. Develop and implement a comprehensive internal and external marketing plan that increases revenues and profits for the Company by originating new natural gas business. Primarily responsible for leading the natural gas business development team in the expansion of our existing assets, development of new natural gas assets, and acquisition of third-party assets that provide strategic growth for the department and Company.

Essential duties and responsibilities:

Leads a team of Business Development professionals responsible for the concept development, origination, commercialization, commercial management, and commercial implementation of expansion opportunities on existing natural gas assets and the development of new natural gas assets.
Identify, develop, and execute business opportunities for Tallgrass. Involves developing, negotiating, and executing business contracts, in coordination with departments such as legal, financial, engineering and operations functions.
Close coordination and collaboration with Tallgrass’ decarbonization business development personnel team and Tallgrass’s commercial marketing/operations team.
Provide general industry monitoring and analysis.
Provide support in conducting regular evaluations of the Business Development structure for continual improvement of the efficiency and effectiveness of the group.
Assess competitive threats and recommend strategies to mitigate risks to company performance.
Develop and recommend tariff strategies for company pipelines.
Identify and market/restructure Tallgrass assets not performing to expectations.
Analyze U.S. supply/demand fundamentals as well as pricing and market trends in various regions across the country.
Develop strong knowledge of business strategy, competitors and operations.
Maintain an awareness of changing market conditions, new developments, and competitor strategies.
Scrutinize activities of competitors, identifying risks to the Company’s financial performance and develop countermeasures to protect the bottom line.
Model scoping project economics and develop/submit proposals.
Leverage business knowledge to evaluate appropriate use of capital expenditures, budgeting and expense management, margin analysis and inventory management.
Ensure all compliance aspects of position are known and followed; understand and comply with all policies, codes and regulations applicable to position and company.
Monitor and enforce all compliance requirements for area of responsibility.
Identify and develop capital expansion opportunities. Define scope, coordinate preparation of cost estimates, and prepare economic analysis.
Develop business in support of origination efforts; identifying and originating transactions which will bring value to the Company.
Assist in or produce feasibility studies/business plans for new business opportunities.
Develop marketing campaigns for new pipelines and business opportunities. This includes formulating a specific budget and expenditure plan for each.
Bring new transportation and storage business to the Company.
Work closely with top executive management to keep them up-to-date on strategic opportunities.
Responsible for the evaluation of strategic opportunities that increase shareholder and/or customer value.
Utilize financial modeling to evaluate the accounting, valuation and leverage effects of potential acquisitions.
Identify and pursue acquisition and/or joint venture opportunities consistent with company performance expectations, frequently taking the lead on acquisition related activities.
Identify and pursue acquisition candidates that fit into Tallgrass’ business strategy. Develop creative restructuring of those candidates that are not an exact fit.
Assist in acquisition execution as required.
Oversee all aspects of the deal-making process including analysis, due diligence, negotiating and closing. Develop customized transactions that address the needs of a variety of customers through the use of company resources.
Identify, attract, and retain customers into company-owned pipelines.
Formulate and negotiate commercial terms of revenue-generating agreements.
Maintain close contact with customers to ensure satisfaction with services provided and pursue further business opportunities.
Negotiate contract terms and generate agreements for legal review and execution.
Promote Tallgrass business services through active participation in industry groups developing standards and promoting the industry in general.
Market existing and new services by developing customer base. Originate and evaluate opportunities to leverage current assets.
Further relationships with customers by assisting with additional services to enhance services offered by Tallgrass.
Develop and maintain top-level decision-maker relationships at target customers.
Effectively work with Engineering, Project Management and Operations departments to ensure customer requirements are achieved and aligned with proposals.
Effectively work with personnel in Tallgrass’ company assets to provide comprehensive solution for the customer.
Coordinate with customers, existing and potential; including but not limited to confirming customer/project needs, negotiating gaps between project and company needs and redefining project(s) by marketplace.
Establish negotiation strategies that mitigate pricing and contract issues to the satisfaction of the customer, company, and regulatory bodies.
Maintain internal accountability for contract performance when special non-tariff provisions are involved.
Foster a positive open work environment, systems approaches and disciplined execution of all assigned tasks.
Establish effective internal and external working relationships to ensure effective operation, financial performance and development of assigned business assets.
Implement the recommendations of the strategic marketing plan and provide market research and analysis.
Define company strategy for the organization including target customers and applications, competition, pricing, market trends, supplier development and alliances.
Communicate with management on goals and objectives on a regular and consistent basis.
Demonstrate and enforce the highest professional integrity, ethics and safety discipline.
Work with internal support groups and other departments including but not limited to: Engineering, Project Management, Pipeline Operations, Regulatory/Rates, Legal and Environmental.
Ensure internal and external expectations are communicated and met relative to project development and completion.

Work with managers to develop justifiable and necessary capital expenditures.
Communicate with Management on goals and objectives on a regular and consistent basis.
Work closely with senior management to identify and prioritize efforts in support of organizational objectives.

Minimum requirements:

Education:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Business, Economics, Marketing, Engineering, or a related discipline.
A minimum of ten (10) years’ direct work experience in Business Development or Commercial Origination in the energy sector may be considered as a substitute for a degree.

Experience/Specific Knowledge:

A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in Business Development or Commercial Origination within the energy sector.
A minimum of ten (10) years’ experience actively working in the natural gas and/or petroleum industry, to include comprehensive understanding of marketing, gathering, processing, transmission, distribution activities, and regulatory environments.
Advanced proficiency level in MS Office applications that may include but are not limited to Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook.
Demonstrated capability to develop effective, easy to understand, and informative presentation materials within PowerPoint.
Experience in pipeline transportation and storage deal-making.
Experience in negotiating business contracts – particularly revenue-generating agreements.
Must have working knowledge of FERC rules and regulations including Standards of Conduct and related policies.
Working knowledge of Federal and State regulatory processes.
Knowledge of US, Canada, and Mexico natural gas supply, demand and infrastructure is highly desirable.
Demonstrated experience of five (5) or more years working with written and oral proposals.
Proficient in negotiation skills, including five (5) years’ minimum experience negotiating with outside parties and asset purchases/sales

Budgeting and financial reporting experience.
Must have established contacts with producers, pipelines and marketers operating across the US..
General understanding of pipeline operations including hydraulics and scheduling functions.
Experience in identifying and pursuing asset acquisitions.
Knowledge of the energy industry and costing critical to management of team and effective communication with customer.
Successful track record of strategic selling and managing complex and challenging negotiations.
Excellent knowledge of the utility business and industry practices.
Ability to confidently speak to large groups of people when required and to develop effective relationships.
