ABOUT US:

The Schwartz Center for Compassionate Healthcare is a global nonprofit leading the movement to put compassion at the heart of healthcare through programs, education and advocacy. The Center was founded by Ken Schwartz in 1995 a few days before his death to ensure that all patients would receive compassionate care. He wanted to encourage meaningful caregiver-patient relationships and help make the “unbearable bearable.” Research shows that when caregivers are compassionate, patients do better and are more satisfied and caregivers find greater meaning in their work, experiencing less stress and burnout. Hundreds of healthcare organizations in the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are Schwartz Center members, in addition to more than 200 sites in the UK and Ireland that conduct our signature Schwartz Rounds program. Together, we are helping hundreds of thousands healthcare professionals provide compassionate care to millions of patients and families. The pandemic's far-reaching impacts have brought new urgency and shone a national spotlight on our efforts to become the pre-eminent comprehensive well-being organization. The Schwartz Center's expanding focus includes thought leadership and policy development for the healthcare workforce, and a range of direct-service programs and training to support caregivers in the improved delivery of patient care. Our operational budget is funded approximately 50% by philanthropy, with funds coming from individual, corporate, and foundation donors, and 50% by earned revenue, including from our membership.

You are a dynamic and experienced executive with the vision and drive to increase the visibility, influence, and impact of an international organization. You are committed to compassionate care, to the importance of the patient-caregiver relationship, and to supporting the healthcare workforce so they engage with patients and families to deliver the compassionate care that they seek. You are a leader in a mission-driven, service-oriented organization looking for an opportunity to have a national, systems-level impact. You have knowledge of the stressors facing today's healthcare workforce and the challenges of supporting patients. You understand that patients and families seek meaningful engagement in the plan of care and are integral part of the process of care. You have significant leadership experience in strategic planning and identifying opportunities that materially contribute to the growth and performance of your organization. You have proven experience generating capital to deliver on strategic plans. You have experience as the public face of your organization: as a fundraiser, as a salesperson, and as an ambassador. You are a people-oriented leader and consensus builder; a strong communicator who can effectively interact with key stakeholders, including the Board of Directors and healthcare leaders; and want to be part of a high-performing, growing mission-driven organization striving to create a better healthcare world grounded in compassion.

ABOUT THE WORK:

The CEO is responsible for carrying out the Schwartz Center's mission statement, setting the vision and strategy of the organization, and establishing the Schwartz Center as a national healthcare thought leader. The CEO sets the national agenda and increases the visibility and impact of the organization. The CEO collaborates with partners, donors, and other external stakeholders to ensure the Schwartz Center's financial success. The CEO is the public face of the organization and serves as the Center's chief fundraiser and marketer. The CEO advances the organization's thought leadership efforts through publication, speaking engagements, media appearances, and periodic, policy-level advocacy. The CEO encourages a mission-driven culture and motivates staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Mission Leadership

Be an inspirational leader who lives the mission of the Schwartz Center, energizing staff, member organizations, stakeholders, and donors around the mission.

Be the leading advocate and ambassador of the Schwartz Center, cultivating relationships with a range of constituents including healthcare leaders; physicians and nurses; hospitals and health systems; business, academic, and community leaders; foundations and major donors; federal, state and civic officials; and members of the media and general public.

Articulate the vision, mission, and values of the organization to corporate and nonprofit partner organizations and external parties.

Organizational Strategy

In conjunction with the Board, develop short and long-term strategic plans, leveraging organizational strengths, resources, and relationships to reinvigorate existing programs and pursuits.

Continue to create a national and international agenda for the Schwartz Center, seeking innovative ideas and serving as a catalyst for long-term change and growth.

Provide consultation to the Board to keep the governing body aware of trends, innovations, and opportunities that will support the organization's strategic direction.

Think strategically regarding marketing, fundraising, and philanthropic efforts and continually seek ways to engage with donors, expand the base, meet fundraising targets, and identify new sources of revenue.

Operations

Ensure a vibrant, transparent, and team-oriented organizational culture with employees working remotely in the Boston area and across the country.

Demonstrate a strong understanding of financials and how they relate to the health of the enterprise, recognizing trends or areas of potential improvement.

Manage direct reports including the Chief Operating Officer, Chief Development Officer, and Chief Medical Officer.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

The following goals and objectives have been identified as priorities for the CEO and will be seen as measures of success within the first 12 months:

Become the external face of the Schwartz Center across the healthcare community and to all key influencers, public officials, and media; seek to participate in national industry groups/associations and to reinforce the Schwartz Center's mission and brand identity wherever possible, including identifying and cultivating future Board members nationally. Strengthen existing ties with Schwartz Center supporters, including the Leadership Council and Honorary Board, balancing the organization's Boston roots with its expansion strategy.

In collaboration with the Board, develop a multi-year strategic plan.

Restructure the Development team and work collaboratively to expand the donor base, identify new sources of revenues, and position the organization for the future.

Provide leadership support and vision for the team.

Over the following 24 months, you should:

Expand the presence of the Center across a larger set of health care institutions by expanding existing programs and the launching of new initiatives.

Work with the Board of Directors and leadership to review and refine the organization's programs in light of strategic opportunities, industry trends, and long-term sustainability.

Further establish the Schwartz Center as an authority and thought leader as it relates to compassionate care

WE'RE A GOOD FIT IF YOU HAVE:

ü 10+ years of executive mission-driven leadership

ü Experience leading a national organization

ü Fundraising experience including securing major gifts, building corporate and foundation relationships, and securing the necessary capital to deliver on strategic plans

ü An understanding of the healthcare industry and an appreciation of emerging trends and opportunities

ü Experience expanding an organization's visibility, influence, and impact

ü A strong track record of building relationships with senior executives as well as educating, influencing, and engaging leaders at the C-suite level

ü Experience working with a board of directors in a relationship built on trust, mutual respect, and principles of effective governance

ü Effective talent management experience that includes mentoring, engaging, and inspiring a team

ü A proven track record of strong financial decision-making and stewardship of resources to deliver on strategic plans

ü Ability to identify new revenue opportunities

ü Excellent communication skills, including writing and public speaking experience

ü Sensitivity, good judgment, relationship-building skills, and high standards in communicating with members, customers, and donor prospects

ü A passion for advancing compassionate healthcare; experience in relationship-centered care a plus

ü A desire to be a part of a mission-driven organization that is creating a world where all who seek and provide healthcare experience compassion

ü A bachelor's degree is required; a graduate degree in business administration, healthcare administration or related field is highly desired
