The Director of Operations reports to the CEO and has the following direct reports: Manager of Residential and Guest Services, Manager(s) of Dining and Housekeeping Services, Manager of Facilities, and Reception Coordinator.

The Director of Operations has administrative oversight of the day-to-day operations of the BA as it pertains to the functions and purpose of Residential and Guest Services, Dining and Housekeeping Services, Facilities, and Reception and their relationship to the organization.

Works closely with the Director of Finance to develop, monitor and review budgets, operating revenues and expenses for direct report departments
Works closely with the CEO in coordinating the work of these departments in support of the entire organization and with particular attention to Christian Science nursing and Christian Science nurses training
Has oversight of compliance throughout the organization
Oversees special projects for the organization
Ensures purchases are supported by Purchase Orders approvals and monitored against budgetary constraints with all direct report departments
Understands the purpose and mission of the Benevolent Association and the role and responsibilities of the Director of Operations in carrying out its purpose

DETAILS OF DUTIES

Metaphysically supports the organization and the position of the Director of Operations
Understands the organizational structure of the organization, exercises sound management practices and exemplifies leadership qualities
Understands facility management
Has excellent computer skills; proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
Understands and assists in developing department and budget/accounting reporting and monitors
Oversees all compliance within the organization and coordinates with managers responsible for compliance in their specific departments
Oversees special projects for the organization
Oversees purchase order process with direct report departments
Works with direct report departments that are outsourced to help ensure harmony with and support for the BA’s purpose and mission
Is responsible for giving annual performance reviews for direct reports
Willing and able to give presentations for the BA
Able to represent the Benevolent Association for BA meetings and events as appropriate
Able to respond to BA emergencies that pertain to Director of Operations oversight
Performs other duties as assigned

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

Is a dedicated member of The Mother Church and a branch church, or a local member of The Mother Church
Has had Christian Science primary class instruction from an authorized teacher of Christian Science
Has an understanding and love for the Church Manual By-law, “Christian Science Nurse”
Familiarity with IT
Proficient computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
Has a Bachelor’s degree, 3 years management experience
Has strong verbal and written communication skills

Working at the BA

The BA was founded in 1916 in response to Mary Baker Eddy’s call for skilled Christian Science nursing to support those relying on Christian Science for healing. It is located on 24.2 acres of gardens and woodlands within minutes of downtown Boston.

Employees enjoy housing in surrounding communities, on the campus itself in the Carriage House apartments (for Journal-listed Christian Science nurses), or in rooms in the historic Original Building. On-site staff housing is subject to availability. Restaurants, shopping, and theaters are within walking distance.

The Boston area is home to a community of Christian Scientists, many of whom work in the Christian Science movement. The Mother Church is just minutes away, and there are a number of branch churches in the surrounding area. Longyear Museum is located just across the street from the BA.

Reading to patients

During late-morning small gatherings to hear the Bible Lesson
One-on-one sharing of the Bible, Mrs. Eddy’s writings, and other authorized Christian Science literature

Playing and singing music

At a hymn sing
For group sing-a-alongs or concerts

Sharing a talent or interest with residents or patients

Teaching art, a movement class, etc.
Sharing a hobby, such as birding, photography, travel, crafts, etc.
Reading and discussing a book
Discussing The Christian Science Monitor
Working in the BA’s extensive gardens
Helping with painting and building projects
Providing office support
