As anEngineering Manager, Backendat FlightAware you’ll provide leadership, technical guidance, and product vision to a team of engineers and collaborate with cross-functional partners to design and develop services, products, and infrastructure used by thousands of customers each day. FlightAware’s product and service portfolio is expansive, and you could beoperating across high-performance customer-facing APIs, internal distributed data fusion systems, our industry-leading website and mobile apps, and more. You may also bring expertise in system reliability as well as API design and implementation.

In this role, you willlead, support, and inspire backend software engineers on your team. As ahands-on leader, you’ll help them fulfill technical, operational, and business requirements. You’ll work alongside talented engineers and partners acrossProduct, Design, Sales, and Marketing to guide architecture and delivery of major infrastructure and product improvements. The ideal candidate will be able tosolve complex technical challengeswhile delivering incredible improvements to product reliability and quality. What YOU will do:

YOU will lead and support a culture of collaboration, critique, and candid feedback.
YOU will mentor and grow engineers to foster an extremely high-performing team.
YOU will contribute architectural solutions and code implementations at the senior engineer level as part of your hands-on work with the team (code-review, on-call participation, jump starting new projects, implementing tickets). You will split your time fairly evenly across people management and coding.

YOU will lead integrated product development teams that ship major new improvements to a visible and important product or area.
YOU will collaborate with product owners and engineering leadership to break down complex projects into smaller pieces and iterate on their design and implementation.

Education & Experience:

Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 14 years of relevant experience

Qualifications you must have:

Must be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship now or in the future. RTX will not offer sponsorship for this position.
Software engineering leadership experience as both a people manager and a leader of a cross-functional integrated product development team.
Recent individual contributor experience implementing solutions with Go, Rust, and/or Python. You must be adept in SQL, with experience in PostgreSQL or MySQL.
You have a demonstrated ability to represent your team and their work to stakeholders with differing levels of technical fluency.
Experience with system/software architecture design, building large, scalable, high availability systems.
Hiring manager experience with the full recruitment lifecycle including attracting, recruiting, and retaining top engineering talent.

Skills we value:

Experience with cloud native methods, architectures, and technologies, like DevSecOps, Open Telemetry, Kubernetes, Knative, Grafana, Helm, or Istio.
Experience with big data, streaming, queuing, and cloud technologies like AWS, Cloudflare, Spark, or Kafka.
Experience with microservice design and interaction including service meshes, API contracts, and graphql.
Execution focused with an ability to navigate ambiguity. Have worked successfully in a small company or an entrepreneurial environment.
Interpersonal skills and high emotional intelligence. Deeply empathetic and caring. You possess a willingness to empower and inspire commitment and a positive attitude in a team.
