Job Description

The mission of the New York Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. The Office of the Deputy Commissioner of Legal Matters provides legal guidance to the Police Department and is responsible for advising all members of the Department on all legal matters affecting the Department, including major criminal and civil litigation and important legislative and judicial developments. The office monitors and facilitates the relationship between the Department and the rest of the criminal justice system and assists members of the service in interpreting and enforcing state, federal, and local laws; ensures that the policies and practices of the Department are lawful and are fairly applied; and develops legislation in accordance with the needs of the Department and public safety concerns. In addition, pursuant to investigations into NYPD personnel, practices and policies, the Bureau serves as the Department's liaison to Office of the Inspector General for the NYPD; the NYC Department of Investigations; the New York State Attorney General's Office; and the Department of Justice.

The NYPD Inspector General Coordination Unit is responsible for document collection and production related to investigations by the Office of the Inspector General for the NYPD; the NYC Department of Investigations; the New York State Attorney General's Office; and the Department of Justice (collectively referred to herein as "oversight entities"). It is also responsible for preparing members of the service for interviews and drafting public responses to reports and recommendations made pursuant to these investigations.

Reporting to the Director, Privacy Matters, the Managing Attorney will:

Supervise a team of approximately 7 uniformed and civilian members.
Oversee the intake, processing, and assignment of new requests for records and data by oversight entities.
Prepare members of the service for interviews with oversight entities.
Oversee the drafting of the Department's responses to reports issued by oversight entities.
Liaise with oversight entities pursuant to ongoing investigations.
Perform various administrative duties related to the oversight of the Unit.

Minimum Qualifications

Admission to the New York State Bar; and either "2" or "3" below.
One year of satisfactory United States legal experience subsequent to admission to any state bar; or
Six months of satisfactory service as an Agency Attorney Interne (30086).

Incumbents must remain Members of the New York State Bar in good standing for the duration of this employment.

In Addition To Meeting The Minimum Qualification Requirements

To be assigned to Assignment Level (AL) II, candidates must have one year of experience at Assignment Level I or two years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment. To be assigned to AL III candidates must have two years of experience in Assignment Levels I and/or II or three years of comparable legal experience subsequent to admission to the bar, in the areas of law related to the assignment.

Preferred Skills

Admission to the NY State Bar. - Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written. - Demonstrated ability to both coordinate and maintain productive relationships with external entities. - Strong ability to manage high-volume requests in a fast-paced environment.

Residency Requirement

New York City Residency is not required for this position.
