Adela is focused on the detection of cancer and other high-morbidity, high-mortality conditions through a blood test. The Company’s genome-wide methylation analysis technology has the unique ability to distinguish the most highly informative (methylated) regions of the genome from the non-informative regions and preferentially target those informative regions for sequencing. The technology is initially being developed for use across the cancer continuum for detection, diagnosis, and management, and in the future, it will be applied to other conditions beyond cancer.

We're thrilled to be on the lookout for a passionate and skilledSoftware Engineer IIto join our innovative team. As a Software Engineer II on our Bioinformatics team, this individual will be responsible for supporting the infrastructure necessary to process vast amounts of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data generated by numerous products at Adela. The key technology used to derive these data will be from an assay that pulls down methylated regions from cell-free DNA methylated across the entire genome using immunoprecipitation. This whole genome sequencing (WGS) approach results in exceptionally large amounts of data, relative to targeted approaches, and poses a unique opportunity for creativity in translating these data that is not always possible with targeted assays. This role will be responsible for working closely with a cross-functional team to develop a framework that can rapidly translate work from research and development (R&D) efforts into a product that will meet the scaling and compliance needs for the commercialization of a diagnostic bioinformatics pipeline for submissions including, but not limited to, PMA, 510(k), CLIA, and the FDA.

Furthermore, given the volume of data generated, this individual will have the opportunity to establish a machine learning framework as a critical element in our diagnostic workflow. The current stack is a blend of Python, C/C++, Spark, SQL, Terraform, Nextflow, Databricks, MLfow and AWS. An individual who possesses some prior experience with these languages and technologies is preferred, but experience in similar technologies with an appetite to learn is welcomed in this role.

An ideal candidate is someone with a background in software development, experience working with large volumes of data, extreme adaptability, and an insatiable curiosity. While a background in genomics and NGS is highly desired as there will be a large degree of translating key processes rooted in the biological and technological challenges of patient sample processing, a candidate who shows an eagerness to learn in a rapidly evolving field will also be considered. A significant part of the day-to-day responsibilities for this candidate will be ensuring data integrity and completeness as it plays a critical role in a greater business initiative for generative AI framework across numerous indicators, as well as ongoing R&D efforts to rapidly release existing products. This candidate must be meticulous in ensuring data quality and implement robust tests/checks to ensure both users and dependent systems can easily access correct information that will be used to drive key product decisions. With a robust data architecture established, there will be increased opportunity to develop the machine learning framework that it relies upon.

As this is a position in an early start-up, there is ample room for career growth and the opportunity to work with senior team members to make a large impact on product decisions. The contributions of this member will be critical in driving product delivery and supporting rapidly evolving R&D teams. The key responsibilities will include:

Implementing data ingestion solutions and ensuring the fidelity of the data produced/captured at Adela
Ensure data equivalency across teams and capture software requirements for the system
Support the development of an ML framework that relies on robust feature engineering and data integrity
Engineer bioinformatic tools suitable to meet the needs of researchers while still ensuring traceability through our systems
Translate R&D work to software that meets the need of a regulated product within the regulatory framework using SDLC
Educate users on system best practices

Basic Qualifications:

Degree in Computer Science or relevant field. Experience in genomics, biochemistry, and molecular biology is a bonus. Exposure to medical device software is a bonus
2+ years' experience in software development roles (could including paid academic positions)

Preferred Qualifications:

Insatiable curiosity, a healthy dose of skepticism that drives critical thinking, and a desire to make a large impact in a rapidly evolving sector with high potential impact in medical care.
Proficiency in python and SQL. Bonus if familiar with spark and Nextflow (or other similar process orchestration languages)
Experience working in a large-scale data architecture and writing ELTs
Understands machine learning best practices. Preferred experience with at least one machine learning framework (Tensorflow, MLflow, Keras, etc.)
Comfort working in a cloud compute environment
An understanding of NGS diagnostics assays and common engineering challenges that arise in this sector
A philosophy of prioritizing the automation of redundant and tedious compliance tasks to support scaling and efficiency
An eagerness to learn systems engineering best practices and work in a disciplined manner with respect to writing software to requirements
