🌆 About The Role

At Replo, we're not just looking for someone to pull Linear tickets and write code — we want an engineer who's eager to grab the steering wheel alongside us on our technical and product journey. We believe that good things happens when engineers don't just code, but also contribute their unique insights to the product process.

Architecting and implementing backend systems in TS/JS/Node is the core of what you’ll be doing. Real examples include:

designing and building an ingestion pipeline for Replo page analytics
building out an A-B testing platform
spiking on our CI platform for a week to improve stability
deploying a multi-tenant NextJS app to render pages on Cloudflare and automatically revalidate in response to queued webhook handlers

You'll be working very closely with other engineers, the product team, designers, and often directly with our customers, not just to ship code, but to craft solutions that are as stable as they are maintainable (we’re here for a good timeanda long time 😅)

Your day-to-day job will usually be designing and building backend code in Typescript/Javascript. Since we’re a small team, occasionally you might reach into the frontend, or another part of our system to do what needs to be done, but for the most part, you’ll be focused on the backend/systems architecture.

Looking for someone who:

We want someone who knows about distributed systems and service oriented architecture: load balancers, databases, queuing, caching, HTTP, APIs, high-availability, fault tolerance, redundancy, at-least-two-of-everything. If you know at least some of those terms, read on.

We’re looking for someone who:

Has 4+ years of professional experience with production distributed systems, service oriented architecture.
Has ability to write TS/JS. If you have experience writing these systems in Python/Go/Java that’s cool too, as long as you’re willing to learn Node — the learning curve on writing JS isn’t that high for high-caliber engineers. Experience or working knowledge of React is great too, but we can teach you that if we need to.
Has professional experience building and deploying scalable systems in real life, including distributed systems (queueing, caching, error handling and alerting, etc)
Has a product- and customer-focused mindset. Everything we do on the backend is driven by customer requirements. We’ve all worked somewhere where the engineering team doesn’t know who the customer is, or how the product is used, and those places generally aren’t fun places to work.
Has experience being burned by deployment and maintenance issues. If you have a a strong opinion on how backend systems should be built, that’s good.
Values writing clean, maintainable software, including documentation. I.e. the code needs to be correct and run fast, but we’re the ones that have to read it and understand it.
Is comfortable with ambiguity and defining software architecture patterns to solve customer pain points.

Experience as a startup founder, or experience with early stage startups is a plus. We want engineers who are self-driven and will default to doing something rather than nothing.

Bonus points if you:

Are an ex-founder OR worked at an early-stage (Series A or earlier) startup previously
Have not wasted hours interview-prepping on Leetcode. Implementing a B-Tree from scratch is impressive, but we’ve never had to do it in our day to day jobs 😭
Have experience with modern full-stack React frameworks like Next.js or Remix (the founder of NextJS/Vercel is one of our investors)
Have an eye for visual design (or past experience in product design, Figma, etc).

We believe in communicating compensation expectations clearly up-front for potential candidates. The salary range for this position is$120-200k base salary, and we offer an equity component of compensation in addition. Within this range, the specific salary offered will depend on a variety of factors, including leveling, job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and market location.
